America’s Birthday Quilt Display Project

250th Birthday July 4, 2026

Calling all quilters to be a part of this Historic Quilting Event

Quilting is the quintessential American art form. With that, we invite youto make a quilt to celebrate America’s birthday in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The theme of this quilt event:   E Pluribus Unum- Out of Many, One.

These quilts will be hung on the outside wall of Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) facing Market Square for several days.  It could rain so keep that in mind as you choose fabrics.

If the outside walls of FAM get filled, we will then display quilts down the alley leading up to Market Square off Caroline St. and the Fredericksburg Visitor Center.

 How To Submit Your Quilt:

Your quilt can be a design of any aspect of American history or American culture.

 • Quilt size is 3’x3’ only.  You may enter as many quilts as you like.

 • Do not add batting to your quilt, if it rains, it will make quilt heavy.  Long Arming may not be needed either.

 • 3 inch sleeve across the top is required for hanging.

 • Quilts will be displayed as high as 30 feet, small details might not get noticed.

 • Quilts will be due June 14,, 2026.

 • Write your name, email and phone number on paper with ink or Sharpie. Place paper into a snack size ziplock bag and seal the bag. Sew or safety pin SEALED ziplock on the back of your quilt under the 3 inch sleeve.  Remember, it could rain. That is why they are in zip lock bags.

 • Quilts will be dropped off or mailed before June 14, 2026 to an address to be determined.

If you or your guild would like to participate, please contact:

Lecture: Graphic Quilts of the 20th Century

Presented by: Tara Miller of The Quilt District

Tara will be with us in person!

Tara Miller says “I am a quilt historian, pattern designer, teacher, and speaker. I help quilters find their voice through fearless fabric play, masterful print mixing, and meaningful connections to the makers who came before us. My work bridges tradition and innovation—modern quilts grounded in history and purpose.”

“I bring a historian’s curiosity, a teacher’s heart, and a designer’s eye for bold, unexpected combinations. Whether I’m giving a lecture, leading a workshop, or hosting a retreat, I aim to spark creativity, build confidence, and foster connection—between quilters and across generations.”

    Workshop: Magic of Mixing Prints

Presented by: Tara Miller of The Quilt District

Mixing prints doesn’t have to feel overwhelming—in fact, it can be the most joyful part of the process. In this workshop, I’ll show you how to break out of the “matching” mindset and start combining fabrics from different designers, collections, and eras with ease.

You’ll learn how to mix color, scale, and motif in a way that feels intentional, personal, and a little bit daring.

Let’s turn fabric chaos into quilt magic—together.

Lecture: “Now You See It and Now You Don’t”

Presented by: Brita Nelson, the Questioning QuilterShe  We will learn about the magic and beauty of disappearing blocks with this interactive online lecture, demo and trunk show.    She uses 3 cameras in this lecture.   One on her and the quilts, one pointing straight down at the cutting mat, and one close-up on the quilts. Using the Zoom format you will be able to ask questions for her to answer during the presentation.  She will also show you how different block designs can be enhanced by color choices or slight modifications to make even more interesting full quilts.

    Workshop: Magic of Disappearing Blocks

Presented by: Brita Nelson, the Questioning Quilter

Brita says, “This 6 hour workshop will be structured similar to a “sew along”. There are 9 blocks and I will teach each one in turn. I have 2 cameras, one on me and the sewing machine and one pointing straight down at the cutting mat and pressing surface.  I will demonstrate how to make the block along with little tips on accurate piecing and pressing. The students will then follow along and take turns showing the class how their block came out. The Zoom features allow me to answer questions immediately and help anyone who might be having a little trouble. As some students finish before others, I will show other possible layouts and talk about things like how to enlarge the pattern, or use different colors and how these blocks might look in a finished quilt.”
